A housekeeper’s daughter and a daughter of privilege find their fortunes reversed in this novel by the New York Times–bestselling author of The Diary.

The caretaker’s cottage is the only home fifteen-year-old Abigail Armstrong has ever known. She and her mother, Rosalie, work for the well-to-do Meriwhethers. Lila Meriwhether is Abigail’s best friend, and Abigail has fallen in love with Lila’s twin brother, Vaughn. But one day the unthinkable happens The employers who’d always treated them like family accuse Rosalie of stealing a diamond necklace and banish her and Abigail. A quarter of a century will pass before Abigail sees Lila or Vaughn again.

Twenty-five years later, Lila is leading a charmed life as the Park Avenue wife of a powerful businessman. But a scandal leaves her and her son nearly bankrupt. Abigail, the owner of a celebrated homemaking empire, is meanwhile coping with the fallout from a fire in her Mexico factory. In a capricious twist of fate, Lila is forced to take a job as Abigail’s housekeeper. But it is Vaughn, now a documentary filmmaker, who will shake up Abigail’s world and force her to confront the girl she used to be.

Woman in Black eBook Eileen Goudge

It is a classic story in many ways, a young girl suddenly learning the hard lessons of class privilege when the kind rich people who employed her mother unjustly threw them off the estate. Partly fueled by her determination to never again be at other's mercy, she worked hard and amassed her own fortune.
But that's not the whole story, of course. She's given the opportunity to play Lady Bountiful toward the woman who turned her back so long ago, but finds the experience much more complicated than expected, as the reader would expect.
The novel is saved from utter predictability by the introduction of the woman in black, a poor factory worker in Mexico whose daughter dies in a workplace fire. It is a tragic accident, but not without an underlying cause. Worker safety has been sacrificed to a production schedule. It seems that class privilege comes at a cost.

Woman in Black eBook Eileen Goudge Reviews

A novel about many forms of slavery and it's devastating impact on two families.

Loved the characters and the author 's vivid descriptions of landscape throughout the book.

Appreciated the sensitive treatment of the long term mental and physical anguish of sexual abuse.
I'm not even half-way through. I hate when there's too many similies and analogies in a freakin book. Can we get a real novel? This feels remedial to me, like a 10th grade writing class. I'm sorry, i would not buy, and might not finish...
This story felt more like real life. I've read at least one other of your books and I remembered the name because of the impression it made. This has it's heart aches but also it's moments of glory, like real life. We, my husband and i, have had a hard time for a while now but we take minutes of vacation because we can't afford a real vacation, but a beautiful sunset, the ocean doing it's thing, pretty flowers, etc all God's beauty and they are free. Do you know Kristin Hannah? I've read some of her books too. Your books remind me her.
This is the story of two women who find their finances reversed. They have known each other for a lifetime, but jealousy and secret hurts have separated them.
It starts slowly but picks up steam as it moves forward. It was a captivating story of friendship, betrayal, forgiveness and love.
I read this book while on a recent cruise and enjoyed it tremendously. Oddly, though, I liked the Lila character so much more than the Abigail character, and I still can't figure out why. Abby was a very sympathetic young woman, but by the time we catch up with her as an adult mother of a teenager, she seemed almost too hardened by life, despite achieving great success. Lila, on the other hand, grew into someone I felt I'd enjoy knowing. Just my opinion, of course, and it certainly didn't keep me from continuing to read until the story ended. Ms. Goudge is such a talented writer that you keep wanting to turn pages, and you always look forward to another of her books.
This is a wonderful story of three families. The first was dealing
With a tragic loss of a daughter due to the lack of oversite of safety at
Her factory in Mexico.
The second family was that of caretaker and daughter who
Were like part of the family they worked for.
The third family were the owners of the big house. They
Were loving and caring people, but let her friend down
In a time of crises.
As finances sometimes come go it finds the women
Trading places in society.
This book shows how love and hate can rule lives
Until forgiveness happens.
It was interesting to read how these lives intertwine.
My review doesn't do this book justice. It was
Amazing!!!
I have never read a book written by this author that is anything less than fabulous. Her characters are so real that you feel as if you would like to sit down and have coffee and a chat with them. If you are looking for something new to read pick this or any book by Eileen Goudge and you will love it!
