This is a hard book to rate. On the one hand, it does attempt to fill a gap in the available information about ASL. Educational material on ASL is scarce compared to other languages with so many speakers. All the information contained within is good.On the other hand, it is far from comprehensive, and really does not serve well as a reference at all. The organization of the book is deliberately non-sequential, with the intent that you can flip to any page and get good information. However, the trade-off is that it's not very deep. It's not a "language grammar" in the conventional sense of a thorough exposition of the mechanisms of a language, and it does not build upon previous concepts to explain new ones. There is a lot of repetition and redundancy.
In summary, if you already have some practical understanding of conversational ASL, this will give you some new formulas and constructions to use. If you are trying to approach ASL from a linguistic perspective, this won't help you very much.

This book is an amazing work of sorting through the grammar of American Sign Language.
It was easy to use and was truly a guide in learning how to construct ASL grammar.
I appreciate the time it took the authoress to pull all these details together.
I would recommend this book to parents, teachers, interpreters, and extended family members.
Finally, a grammar reference book for American Sign Language! Straightforward and easy to use with one page per grammar element - it's easy to get to what I need without plowing through burdensome content. It contains clear descriptions and ASL sentence examples for each element. The organization made it very easy for me to grab what I needed and run with it!
I got the print book and the ASL version on the ASL Learn website - parallel texts are a great resource for my work as a professional interpreter.
Despite being one page per rule, it is difficult to follow. Needs more examples. Not an easy way to find what you want. The first rule is Object Verb Subject and as a rule subject is at the end. This doesn’t follow the most popular SVO Word Order. Vallis book is more interesting.
